Commuters Welcome PM’s Rs100 Per Litre Petrol Relief Scheme
ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Sep, 2026) Daily commuters, motorcycle riders, rickshaw drivers, and small car owners have welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's petrol relief package, viewing the Rs100 per litre subsidy as a much-needed support measure during high fuel prices.
Scheme Details:
The scheme aims to ease the burden on low- and middle-income groups, offering monthly savings of up to Rs2,000 for two- and three-wheelers and up to Rs3,000 for small cars.
Background:
Petrol prices had risen sharply, reaching Rs375.82 per litre due to global oil market pressures and tensions in the Middle East. The government announced the relief initiative to alleviate citizens' difficulties caused by these increasing costs.
Key Features:
- Two- and Three-Wheelers: Eligible vehicles get a Rs100 per litre discount on up to 20 litres of petrol monthly, with a maximum savings of Rs2,000. Each eligible user receives four tokens per month, each worth Rs500.
- Small Cars: Vehicles with up to 800cc are eligible for the same discount on up to 30 litres, saving up to Rs3,000.
- Registration and Awareness: Registration is through a dedicated system, with public awareness campaigns ongoing. Motorcycles and rickshaws registered from January 1, 2006, onwards can now participate, extending eligibility beyond the previous cut-off date of 2011. SMS registration is free for all vehicle owners.
Commuter Reactions:
Commuters at Islamabad and Rawalpindi fuel stations expressed satisfaction with the initiative.
- Muhammad Saleem, a daily motorcycle commuter, stated, "The subsidy will significantly reduce my monthly fuel expenses, which had crossed Rs9,000. The Rs2,000 relief is much-needed."
- Waheed Khan, a rickshaw driver, noted the impact of rising fuel prices on transport workers' livelihoods, saying, "Our earnings depend on petrol, and when prices rise, passengers also face fare challenges."
