Kartal wins again as Zverev sets up Djokovic tie

China Open: Sonay Kartal advances as Alexander Zverev sets up Novak Djokovic clash

BBC Sport reports on the China Open with a focus on tennis.

Kartal Continues Winning Return to WTA Tour

Great Britain's Sonay Kartal claimed another victory, defeating China's Wang Xinyu 6-3 6-2 in her second tour match since recovering from a back injury that had kept her out for six months.

Kartal, at 24, reached the quarter-finals of the China Open in 2025 but slipped down to world number 129 during her absence. She retired injured during her last-16 clash against Elena Rybakina at Indian Wells in March and only returned to competition last month.

Zverev Advances to Face Djokovic

Men's top seed Alexander Zverev had a straightforward victory, crushing China's Juncheng Shang 6-0 6-3, setting up a quarter-final clash with world number one Novak Djokovic.

Zverev, winner of the French Open and US Open this year, is looking to boost his ranking and take on Djokovic, who has dominated the China Open, winning it six times and remaining undefeated in Beijing.
