King Charles ‘Heartbroken’ by Deadly Nepal Flash Floods
BBC News reports that King Charles and Queen Camilla are "heartbroken" by the devastating flash floods in Nepal, which have left at least 33 UK residents missing, including a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. The Prince and Princess of Wales also expressed their shock and condolences.
The death toll from the floods has risen to at least 359, with over 1,300 people missing, according to Nepali authorities. Over 600 of the missing are tourists.
King Charles extended his sympathy to all those affected, acknowledging the strong ties many in the UK have with the region. He also praised the courageous efforts of police and armed forces personnel who lost their lives responding to the disaster.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the UK has offered £5 million in aid to Nepal, describing the situation as "very distressing and devastating."
British resident Pramod Pudel, originally from Nepal, shared his distressing account of the situation with BBC Radio Sussex, describing the destruction and missing persons.
Several tour companies have reported missing British nationals, including Alpine Eco Trek, The Trekkers’ Society, and others. The floods have disrupted a recent revival of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a sacred Hindu pilgrimage to Mount Kailash near the Nepal-Tibet border.
