Kohat Police Show Gallantry in 20-Hour Battle Against Terrorists

Kohat Police displayed exceptional courage and determination during a 20-hour battle against terrorists on September 19, 2026. A deadly attack on the old Kohat Police Lines during Friday prayers resulted in at least 22 fatalities, including 15 policemen. However, security forces mounted a resolute response, ultimately neutralizing all eight attackers.

The incident unfolded around 1:20 PM when an explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a mosque within the police complex as worshippers were praying. This was followed by an armed assault as attackers tried to enter police facilities and seek shelter in buildings like the Special Branch and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) installations.

The attack led to a significant loss of life, with at least 22 individuals, including 15 policemen, martyred, and over 103 injured. Rescue efforts recovered additional bodies from the scene, increasing the death toll.

Despite the tragedy, police personnel demonstrated remarkable bravery. They remained steadfast at their posts while the compound came under attack. Senior commanders, including Additional Inspector General of CTD Javad Qamar—who was wounded during the operation—led the frontline efforts.

The clearance operation required tactical precision and patience. Security personnel carefully navigated the complex, aware that armed attackers hiding within sensitive buildings posed a continuous threat. The operation continued through the night until the compound was secured on Saturday afternoon.

Senior police and security officials, such as KP Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, the regional police officer, Kohat district police officer, and Kohat General Officer Commanding, supervised the mission. DSP Naimatullah Marwat and SP Traffic Akbar Shinwari were among the officers who fought valiantly and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Rauf Khan from the District Security Branch, who sustained injuries in the attack, recounted how policemen deployed at the gates immediately responded after the explosion. He praised their bravery and dedication during a time of extreme danger.
