Watch: Earl Spencer says he felt Charles had 'giddy tone' during call after Diana's death

Earl Spencer on Charles' Tone After Diana's Death

Earl Spencer has stated that he perceived a "lightness" in Prince Charles' tone during a phone call following the death of his sister, Princess Diana. In an interview with BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, he recalled receiving a call from Charles at his home in Cape Town, where the future King shared how he had informed Princes William and Harry about Diana's passing at Balmoral Castle.

"I felt there was a sort of giddy tone," Earl Spencer told the BBC. "I'd had a lot of calls that day from people who cared, who were stunned... and I just felt there was a lightness in his tone about Diana's death that really jarred with me."

Buckingham Palace issued a rare statement on Wednesday in response to these claims made by Earl Spencer in his upcoming book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. The statement acknowledged the emotional impact of grief and its potential effect on memory and judgment.

The full interview, titled Princess Diana: My Sister's Story, is available on BBC iPlayer and will air on BBC One at 18:30 BST on Sunday.
