KP Education Minister Calls For Collective Efforts To Promote Literacy
KP Education Minister Arshad Ayub Khan emphasized the need for collaborative action to enhance literacy across Pakistan during a ceremony celebrating International Literacy Day 2026 at the University of Peshawar.
Addressing the Event:
Khan stated that literacy extends beyond basic reading and writing; it forms the cornerstone of human dignity, social integration, and economic opportunities. This year’s global theme, "Literacy for people, planet, and prosperity", underscores these goals, aiming to empower individuals, safeguard our planet, and foster shared prosperity.
Noting the significant number of out-of-school children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (4.9 million), Khan acknowledged that addressing this challenge requires a collective effort from all sectors of society, including parents, teachers, communities, development partners, religious leaders, and social activists.
He commended the initiatives launched by the education department, highlighting efforts to reach underserved populations through community-based education, non-formal programs, accelerated learning, and adult literacy initiatives. Upgrading schools in remote areas, teacher training, and enhancing educational quality remain top priorities.
Khan also mentioned the integration of technology to overcome geographical and accessibility barriers to education, citing the establishment of the Global Virtual School as a significant step forward. He urged schools to instill environmental responsibility in students through water and energy conservation practices, cleanliness campaigns, tree planting, and sustainable living habits.
"Our children are our future," Khan proclaimed. "No child should be denied education due to poverty, gender, location, or disability. Let us unite to make literacy a catalyst for individual empowerment, planetary preservation, and positive global change."
