Rory McIlroy Regains Form with Lead at BMW Championship

BBC Sport journalist Mike Peter reports on Rory McIlroy’s return to form.

In the first round of the BMW Championship, Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) took a clubhouse lead, shooting a six-under par 66. He attributed his improved performance to some "good work" with his swing coach Michael Bannon and caddie Harry Diamond.

McIlroy, who finished 66th at the St Jude Championship last weekend, credited the Bellerive Country Club’s set-up for suiting his game better than Memphis. He specifically mentioned wider playing corridors that allowed him to miss the tee shot slightly without penalization.

He shared his lead with Americans Gary Woodland, Wyndham Clark, JJ Spaun, and Chris Gotterup. Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune was one stroke back at five under, followed by England’s Alex Fitzpatrick, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg in a group tied for seventh on four under.

World number one and defending champion Scheffler, who struggled to a 73, found himself far down the field after a run of four bogeys through the opening seven holes.
