British Athletes Convicted in Connection with Coach's Sex Assault of Minor in Morocco
BBC Sport reveals that three former British athletes—Leon Baptiste, Will Sharman, Lamin Deen, and their associates Richard Sharman, Ashley O'Leary Jones, and David Tuck—were convicted in Morocco for their involvement in a sex assault case.
Leon Baptiste, a UK Athletics coach and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, is currently imprisoned in Marrakech. The other athletes were given suspended sentences of four months and fined £40 each for participating in the enticement of a minor.
This comes after a BBC Sport investigation uncovered Baptiste's conviction and jailing. A girl, aged 16 at the time, reported being brought to a villa, promised money, sexually assaulted, and physically harmed. Court documents describe her suffering "psychological trauma, sexual exploitation, physical assault, and injury, and the violation of her human dignity."
The group maintains their innocence, stating via their lawyers that they were unaware of their convictions until informed by BBC Sport. They had believed they paid an administrative fine and left Morocco believing the matter resolved.
This case highlights a serious issue within the sports community, emphasizing the need for stringent oversight and support mechanisms to protect young athletes from exploitation.
