San Francisco 49ers achieved a dominant 27-7 victory over Super Bowl favourites Los Angeles Rams at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in front of a crowd exceeding 100,000.
This was the NFL’s inaugural game in the Asia-Pacific region and its longest-ever road trip for the first of nine international contests scheduled for 2026.
The 49ers spent a week in Melbourne while the Rams arrived just over 24 hours prior to the match.
"I love when they [the Rams] came out and they were booing," said 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel on Australia’s Channel Seven. "We were out here for a week. We enjoyed the city. I don’t think you can fly 16 hours and be ready to play."
The game ignited in the second quarter when Kyren Williams ran in for a touchdown, giving the Rams a four-point lead following an earlier 49ers field goal.
However, momentum swung back towards the 49ers as Demarcus Robinson scored a touchdown before halftime, followed by Mike Evans and another Samuel touchdown, alongside a second field goal, securing the win for San Francisco.
Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards, including three touchdown passes.
Rams coach Sean McVay acknowledged defeat: "I make no excuses. Whether you want to say it’s about travel, whatever. We just weren’t good enough."
