Mother Demands Answers After Black Woman Found Hanging from Mississippi Tree

Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, has expressed frustration with the lack of updates and transparency from authorities more than a month after her daughter’s discovery.
After initial silence, police confirmed on Tuesday that they are investigating Fortune’s death as a potential homicide, while noting that an official cause of death remains pending. This comes amid local concerns fueled by Mississippi’s history of racial violence and lynchings.
Spivey shared her attempts to gain information about the investigation, describing it as "making me angry." She questioned the delay in providing updates.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney explained that the department treats all pending deaths as potential homicides to preserve evidence during autopsies.
The medical examiner’s office declined to comment on the case. Spivey last saw her daughter alive on 26 July, and was unable to look at her body in a funeral home days before her burial.
Fortune’s death has sparked community concern about rising racial violence in Mississippi, especially with two other similar incidents occurring within the past year.
