NCHD to Begin Literacy Courses for Inmates of Kohat Jail

A delegation from the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) visited District Jail Kohat and discussed the planned launch of the Adult Literacy and Functional Literacy Programme for its inmates.
The delegation comprised Deputy Director NCHD Hassan Afridi and Field Officer Kohat Waqar. The programme will initiate with three-month courses in Adult Literacy and Functional Literacy, followed by a six-month Skill Development Programme.
This initiative is part of the Rehabilitation, Integration, Skills and Education (RISE) Federal Government programme, funded by the Pakistan Human Development Fund (PHDF). A total of 26 jails across Pakistan are selected for this programme, including four in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with District Jail Kohat being one of them.
A baseline survey will be conducted at District Jail Kohat next week, and the programme is expected to formally commence by mid-September 2026.
It’s worth noting that the Adult Literacy Programme was first introduced at District Jail Abbottabad in 2019 and later expanded throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and, subsequently, across Pakistan. District Jail Kohat now has the opportunity to lead this new initiative, further strengthening prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration through education and skill development.
The initiative reflects the commitment of the Inspector General of Prisons and his team towards providing meaningful rehabilitation, education, and vocational opportunities for inmates, preparing them for a productive and dignified life after release.
