Nepal Floods Damage 1,800 Hectares of Crops, Kill Thousands of Livestock: FAO

ROME, September 11, 2026 (WAM) – The devastating flash floods that swept through Nepal’s Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river corridor on August 26, 2026, have had a significant impact:
- Over 1,000 people lost their lives.
- Many more remain unaccounted for.
- Entire communities have been affected.
The floods caused extensive damage:
- Approximately 1,800 hectares of crops, mostly paddy, were destroyed.
- Production losses are estimated at 7,700 tonnes.
- Thousands of livestock, including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and poultry, were killed or lost.
- Farmland, fisheries, food stocks, and agricultural infrastructure were damaged, threatening the food security and incomes of farming families.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is providing support to the Nepalese government in their response efforts:
- Emergency veterinary support for affected livestock.
- Assessments of damage to agriculture and rural livelihoods.
According to FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol, "The human toll of the recent floods has been devastating… But this disaster has also washed away the means by which many families feed themselves and earn an income."
She emphasized the need for:
- Seeds for farmers
- Feed and veterinary care for livestock
- Vaccination, treatment, and disease surveillance to prevent further animal losses.
The FAO is utilizing field assessments and satellite/remote sensing technology to accurately assess the full extent of the damage.
