NHS staff accessing the medical records of the Nottingham attacks victims and possible breaches over a man killed by a tiger is a 'disgrace', said Yvette Cooper, the Health Secretary.
Speaking to the BBC, Cooper emphasized her expectation for action against staff who breach NHS data and privacy standards.
Her comments followed confirmation from Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust that 15 staff members had been sacked for accessing the records of the Nottingham attacks victims illegally. Yorkshire Ambulance Service also revealed that William Chapman's medical records may have been accessed without authorization.
Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, NUH medical director, previously stated, "There is simply no excuse for accessing the records of a patient without a legitimate reason."
Cooper, in an interview with the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, declared, "There's got to be proper respect for patients from NHS staff." She added, "Let me be really clear about this... There are proper data and privacy standards across the NHS."
