A massive sinkhole estimated at 30ft (9.1m) by 30ft has opened up outside a house in Malibu, reportedly owned by Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage. The incident occurred following heavy rain and the collapse of the driveway. No injuries have been reported.
Local media stated that nearby residents were informed about an 8ft sinkhole forming on Monday, but they were not initially concerned. However, the situation escalated during the early hours of Tuesday when further ground gave way, creating a significant crater. The collapse consumed much of the home’s driveway, leaving broken asphalt and concrete inside the hole.
Emergency services responded promptly due to a gas leak caused by the structural failure. SoCalGas confirmed the leak was secured. Traffic cones have been placed around the crater, and waves from the sea can be seen entering and exiting the hole.
The damage occurred amid a Los Angeles coastal flooding warning linked to Tropical Storm Marie, which previously was a hurricane. Although the storm remained offshore, it brought rain and high waves to Southern California.
Malibu City officials have declared several homes on the street unsafe for entry and warned residents that emergency access is severely constrained and the area might be impassable due to road closures.
