Firefighters encountered locked and obstructed escape routes, making rescue efforts challenging. A first-hand account from a firefighter describes the scene upon arrival: "The medical equipment above [the babies] had melted and collapsed onto them."

A Devastating Morning
On August 26th, shouts alerted patients and staff to a fire in the neonatal unit of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.
- Abdul Ghafoor, who was in a nearby ward with his mother, rushed upstairs to assist. He described the ward being engulfed in smoke.
- CCTV footage shows the rapid spread of the fire. According to the report, a nurse's desperate efforts to alert security began at 06:38, but within a minute, dense smoke obscured the camera.
- Hivsa Walid, whose family was nearby, recalls hearing commotion and realising it was a fire when she saw smoke from the neonatal unit.
A Heartbreaking Loss
Funerals were held for some of the babies who perished in the fire, leaving behind a community devastated by this senseless tragedy.
