Aston Villa: No Goals, But Emery’s Strategy Unveiled

It’s a new era for Aston Villa, but the familiar scenario of no goals in their first three Premier League games has emerged. With one shot on target, the team opens its second Champions League campaign under Unai Emery at Club Brugge on Tuesday, aiming to ignite the season.
Last season, Villa took five games to score their first top-flight goal but ended triumphant, winning the Europa League in Istanbul. Since then, six starters from that victory have departed, prompting a significant rebuild of their forward line:
- Nicolas Jackson, signed for £65m, replaces Ollie Watkins, who moved to Al-Hilal for £51m.
- Ibrahim Mbaye and Alejandro Garnacho join to fill the gap left by Morgan Rogers’ £117m move to Chelsea.

Trust in Jackson Crucial for Emery
Watkins’ departure left a void, leaving Villa without their best offensive weapon. Despite a modest first season at Arsenal, Jackson’s arrival was a priority for Emery, who had worked with him at Villarreal.
Emery believes in Jackson’s abilities and has started him in the past two games, including the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and the recent draw at Hull.
Statistical Comparison: Watkins vs. Jackson
Watkins’ 2023-24 season: 14 goals, 5 assists (in 382 fewer minutes than Jackson in 2024-25).
Jackson’s 2024-25 stats: 10 goals in 382 minutes (8 less shots but a lower conversion rate of 13.2% vs. Watkins’ 19.1%).
However, Jackson’s time at Bayern Munich yielded a 21.1% conversion rate, scoring 8 goals in 1,004 minutes.
Emery’s Challenge: Integrating New Signings
Emery must now ensure that Mbaye and Garnacho can support Jackson effectively. Together, Watkins and Rogers scored 46% of Villa’s Premier League goals last season, with 12 assists from Rogers and Lucas Digne. Youri Tielemans also contributed to the team’s success.
With a new-look forward line, Emery’s task is to create a cohesive unit capable of igniting Villa’s season.
