No repeat of Wimbledon heroics as Fery exits US Open

US Open 2026 Results: Arthur Fery’s Debut Ends with Loss to Lorenzo Musetti

BBC Sport

Arthur Fery’s much-anticipated US Open debut ended in a straight-sets defeat by Italian 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

Fery, aged 24, had reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon this summer, catapulting him from 114th to 33rd in the rankings. However, he missed out on a seeded position at the US Open and drew Musetti in his opening match.

Musetti, a previous quarter-finalist but absent from the past two majors due to injury, broke Fery’s serve twice in the third set en route to a 6-3 6-3 7-5 victory. This was Fery’s second appearance at an overseas major, following his Australian Open debut earlier this year.

Despite high confidence after his Wimbledon success and reaching the Winston-Salem Open final, Fery struggled against Musetti’s "vintage" all-around game, highlighted by his impressive one-handed backhand. While Fery started strongly, double faults cost him the first set, and he was unable to capitalize on a break in the third despite threatening a comeback.

Musetti, unperturbed by four break points against him in the second set, sealed victory with a head gesture in celebration after an hour and 49 minutes of play.
