Norway's New King Haakon VIII's First Speech: Remembering 'My Dear Father'

In his first televised address as king, Norway's Haakon VIII paid an emotional tribute to his late father, King Harald V.

Emotional Tribute

"Thank you for being such a good dad," Haakon said, his voice breaking with emotion. He spoke from a desk in Norway's royal palace, surrounded by a picture of his late father, two lit candles, and a bowl of white roses.

Remembering a Loving Father and Husband

Haakon recalled King Harald as a "good father" to him and his sister, Princess Märtha Louise, a "warm and funny grandfather" to his six grandchildren, and a "loving and caring husband" to Queen Sonja. He noted that Saturday would have been their 58th wedding anniversary.

Unity and Values

The new king emphasized national unity, saying the royal family believed in a society built on law and justice. He stressed that everyone is of equal value and that his father had always stayed true to his values and commitments.

Public Outpouring of Grief

Haakon also acknowledged the public's grief and support, mentioning the flowers, tributes, and candles laid outside the royal palace in Oslo. He found comfort in the fact that many Norwegians were grieving together.

A Difficult Time for the Royal Family

Haakon's ascension comes at a challenging time for the royal family, marked by health issues and scandals this year. He will be sworn in at parliament on Tuesday and later participate in a consecration service with his wife, Queen Mette-Marit.
