Norway’s Royal Family Gathers at King Harald’s Bedside as His Condition Worsens
BBC News reports that the royal family of Norway has gathered at the bedside of King Harald V, whose condition has deteriorated to an "extremely serious" state.
King Harald, 89, has been in Oslo University Hospital for over a week being treated for haemolytic anemia, a rare blood condition causing fatigue and shortness of breath. Crown Prince Haakon, his successor, along with other family members, have canceled all engagements to be by his side.
The King’s wife, Queen Sonja, son, Crown Prince Haakon, daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and grandson, Marius Borg Høiby, have all been seen arriving at the hospital. According to Norwegian media, King Harald’s sister, Princess Astrid, is also present.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has canceled a trip to Germany out of respect for the King’s health. He expressed his support, stating, "The whole nation is with us as we send warm thoughts to the king and the rest of the royal family."
Public support has manifested in flowers laid in Palace Square outside the palace in Oslo.
This year has already presented challenges for the Norwegian royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit received a lung transplant in June, and their grandson, Marius Borg Høiby, faced legal troubles after being convicted of rape.
