Olympic champion Liu announces break from competition
BBC Sport reports that Alysa Liu, the Olympic champion in women's figure skating, has confirmed her decision to take a break from competition during the 2026-27 season.
Liu's Announcement
"I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry & skating can evolve. It's important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth," Liu shared on Instagram. She also expressed her intention to support her teammates during this time.
A Brief History of Liu's Career
Liu, 21, made history as the first American female to win Olympic gold in women's singles figure skating since 2002 at the Milano Cortina Games. She also contributed to the United States' gold medal victory in the team event.
However, this is not her first break from the sport. Liu, a former child prodigy, retired from figure skating at the age of 16 in 2022 but made a remarkable comeback, becoming world champion the following year.
