PA Speaker Calls For Strong Institutions To Sustain Democracy
PA Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan said on Tuesday that sustainable democracy requires more than just elections. He emphasized the need for constitutional governance, representative institutions, accountability, and strong public institutions. Speaking at an international conference on "Leadership, Sustainable Democracy, and National Cohesion," the speaker argued that a real leader leaves behind strong and credible institutions capable of serving the public.
He noted that democracy provides a framework for differences of opinion, which should be addressed through institutions and the law, rather than causing division. "Listening to one another is an essential part of democratic practice," he stated, highlighting the importance of strong institutions for public trust and sustainable democracy.
The Punjab Assembly speaker revealed that they had established a Parliamentary Minorities Caucus to promote the participation of minority communities in parliamentary processes and protect their constitutional rights. He also brought attention to Pakistan's young population, saying, "Young people are not merely the future; they are already shaping the country’s future."
Khan urged universities to encourage dialogue, intellectual freedom, and constructive disagreement among students. He advocated for stronger interaction between universities and legislatures, suggesting that academic research could contribute to the legislative process. The speaker also called on young people to dream big and visit the Punjab Assembly, emphasizing the connection between their aspirations and Pakistan's future.
