TORONTO, Canada (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Sep, 2026) The 51st edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Rogers, takes place from September 10–20, 2026. It brings together over 200 films and industry professionals from more than 80 countries.
This year's festival features a total of 293 titles screening across various venues including Roy Thomson Hall, Princess of Wales Theatre, TIFF Lightbox, and others. The event kicked off with the world premiere of Sian Heder’s Being Heumann, positioning it as North America’s largest film festival with a strong emphasis on diverse voices and underdog narratives.
Pakistani actress and producer Mahira Khan left her mark at the Toronto International Film Festival 2026, representing Pakistan's growing influence in global cinema and media. As part of a Pakistani delegation, she attended red carpet screenings, industry panels, and networking sessions designed to foster co-production opportunities between Pakistani and international filmmakers.
Khan participated in discussions as part of the festival’s Community Impact programming and moderated conversations alongside Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother director Bassam Tariq, who also received the Muslim Excellence in Cinema and Arts Award along with Khan during the festival.
Speaking on the sidelines of TIFF, Khan remarked, "It's an honour to represent Pakistan at TIFF. This platform is not just about films; it’s about cultural exchange. Pakistani stories deserve a global audience, and festivals like TIFF give us that stage."
She also took part in a panel discussion on "Women in South Asian Cinema," highlighting evolving roles of women both in front of and behind the camera in Pakistan's film and digital media industry.
TIFF 2026 dedicated special focus to diverse voices, with several South Asian films receiving critical acclaim. Analysts highlight that Pakistani artists' presence paves the way for future collaborations, distribution deals, and cultural diplomacy.
For her debut appearance, Khan chose a powerful cultural statement: a wine chiffon saree by Pakistani label Aafrinish by Niazi, featuring Kashidakari embroidery. The intricate design took over 1,440 hours to complete, with delicate Kashidakari, Cutdana, silver Zari, and lotus motifs.
Observers believe this representation transcends fashion; it positions Pakistani soft power and heritage crafts on a global stage, reinforcing efforts to promote Pakistani talent abroad and explore media cooperation agreements including co-productions and digital content exchange.
