Peace, Tolerance Crucial for Social Cohesion: UoS Seminar

SARGODHA, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 19th Aug, 2026) Peace, tolerance, mutual respect and dialogue are essential for sustainable development and social cohesion, speakers said at a seminar held at the University of Sargodha (UoS) on Wednesday.
The event, organized by the Department of Islamic Studies, focused on “Strengthening Social Cohesion Through Youth Engagement for the Promotion of Peace and Tolerance in Pakistan: An Islamic Perspective”.

Peace as a Foundation: Prof Dr Qibla Ayyaz, Member of the Shariah Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, emphasized that peace is a fundamental prerequisite for prosperity. He drew from Islamic history and teachings, citing examples of peace, wisdom, and non-violence exemplified by Prophets Ibrahim (AS), Yusuf (AS), Musa (AS), and Isa (AS).

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a Model: Prof Dr Ayyaz highlighted the Prophet’s (PBUH) ethical conduct, tolerance, and peaceful engagement as a complete model. He noted that the Prophet (PBUH) defeated opponents through character and moral strength rather than force.

Youth Engagement and Development: Prof Dr Ghulam Hussain Babar, Professor of PMAS-Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, stressed the importance of seeing youth as Pakistan’s greatest asset. He called for bridging generational gaps by engaging young people in constructive activities, reducing societal divides, and promoting dialogue.

Balancing Moral and Economic Development: Prof Babar emphasized the need to balance moral development with economic initiatives like CPEC. He encouraged youth to participate in development while adopting tolerance, restraint, and dignity.

Integrating Youth into Society: Prof Dr Ferozuddin Shah, Chairman of the Department of Islamic Studies, emphasized integrating youth into society and guiding them towards a sense of purpose. He cautioned against arrogance in social behavior, referring to Quranic advice from Luqman (AS).
He urged students to embrace Allama Iqbal’s vision of becoming responsible citizens by prioritizing purpose over careers.
