PESCO to Install 65,000 Smart Meters Under $108m Upgrade Project

The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) plans to install 65,000 Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters as part of its Electricity Distribution Efficiency Improvement Project (EDEIP).
According to documents obtained by Wealth Pakistan, the smart-meter installation is a component of PESCO’s foreign-funded distribution network upgrade, which also includes significant improvements to the company’s network in Peshawar and Khyber circles.
The 5-20kW AMI meters’ installation has been allocated Rs1.82 billion, equivalent to $6.5 million in dollars. Another component involves the installation of aerial bundled cable (ABC) on 60 feeders, covering a total length of 1,298 kilometres in both circles, with a revised cost of Rs3.415 billion. This includes Rs683.043 million in local and Rs2.732 billion in foreign costs.
The project also encompasses:
- Technical assistance covering various equipment, workshops, testing, protective gear, IT, and vehicles (Rs2.67 billion)
- Training and capacity building (Rs126 million)
- Project implementation support (Rs560 million)
The overall EDEIP carries a revised cost of Rs30.256 billion, approximately $108.056 million. This includes local costs (Rs8.988 billion) and foreign costs (Rs21.268 billion). The project estimates also factor in financing costs, price and physical contingencies, and project overheads for PESCO support.
The 65,000 AMI meters, along with the ABC installation and technical-support components, are integral to PESCO’s broader electricity distribution efficiency improvement programme.
