PM Directs Comprehensive Reforms To Modernise Agriculture Sector
PM Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed the greater activation of agricultural research institutions to promote development in the sector and align research with international standards. He chaired a meeting reviewing reforms and policy measures aimed at increasing productivity and supporting farmers.
Key Initiatives:
- Providing all possible support to small and medium-scale farmers to boost per-acre productivity.
- Ensuring quality seeds for farmers through certified companies.
- Developing a comprehensive national system for estimating crop production with stakeholder input.
- Utilizing the experience of students trained in China for agricultural innovation.
- Prioritizing merit and transparency in selecting students for training this year.
Reforms Approved:
- National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) and Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) to be made more effective and meet international standards.
Progress on Agriculture Sector Reforms:
- Accelerated implementation of the Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan 2026-27.
- Focus areas: financial facilitation for farmers, agricultural machinery, modern technology, research, capacity building, food security.

Technology and Digitalization:
- Prioritizing modern technology and artificial intelligence in agriculture.
- Pakistan Tobacco Board Automation Project
- SUPARCO crop assessment program
- AI application for pest and plant identification
Organic Agriculture:
- Measures to promote organic agriculture for boosting exports and rural incomes.
- Development of selected agricultural clusters in Balochistan, Sindh, and Punjab.
