PM Says Rs800 Billion Recovered Through Enforcement Alone, Without New Taxes, As Business-backed Reforms Reshape Economy
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th Sep, 2026) Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, on Tuesday stated that the government, in collaboration with the business community, had implemented long-pending structural reforms over the past two and a half years. He described this process as a result of sustained teamwork between the government and the private sector.
The Prime Minister addressed a gathering of leading industrialists, businessmen, and entrepreneurs, accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister. He extended a warm welcome to the business leaders in attendance.
Shehbaz Sharif revealed that Rs800 billion had been recovered within a year through enforcement measures alone, without the introduction of any new taxes. He attributed this success to the pursuit and resolution of cases pending in courts for over a decade, particularly those related to indirect sales tax paid by consumers. He noted that such enhancements in enforcement were unprecedented in the country’s history.
The Prime Minister recalled numerous meetings held with the business community, including difficult periods, to discuss various economic matters. He emphasized that the recommendations offered by the business community during these meetings had facilitated structural changes with their support. He characterized this as a lengthy journey achieved through collective effort.
He further stated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had, for the first time, provided relevant concessions due to this collaboration. The IMF Managing Director, during his conversation with the Prime Minister, had even agreed to offer a tax waiver.
Sharif emphasized that these initiatives were undertaken in consultation with the business community, describing it as a significant journey accomplished through teamwork. He assured that the government would continue to follow this path with the guidance and assistance of the business community.
Noting the importance of export-led growth, the Prime Minister stated that any achieved growth without an export orientation would be meaningless. He highlighted the extension of special tax relief to exporters in the budget as a testament to this priority.
The meeting’s purpose, according to the Prime Minister, was to solicit the business community’s insights on enhancing exports and potential solutions to associated challenges, especially during the country’s first fiscal quarter.
