Zack Polanski Faces Greatest Crisis of His Leadership So Far

Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, is facing his greatest crisis yet after losing the Holborn and St Pancras by-election to Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali. This comes despite the Greens' strong performance in local elections earlier this year.

In the aftermath of a by-election, the focus typically shifts towards the victor. However, in this case, the media's attention was fixed on Polanski, not the new MP.

Abdi-Wali, a refugee from Somalia who arrived in the UK as a child and later became a councillor, marked a significant shift for the area, traditionally a safe Labour seat. The result can be seen as a relief for Downing Street, but a Greens spokesperson points to their rising momentum since Polanski took leadership over a year ago, with this by-election being their second-best result ever.

The Conservatives, finishing third, beat Reform UK for the first time in an English by-election since the general election, though it's notable that Restore Britain's strong showing may have hindered Reform's chances.

The true focus of media attention, however, centered on Polanski due to a controversial vote at the Green Party's conference. Activists passed a motion equating Zionism with racism, defining it as an ideology promoting "an ethnonationalist Jewish state" and advocating for a single democratic Palestinian state in historic Palestine. Polanski abstained from this vote, choosing instead to campaign in the by-election.

His refusal to participate in interviews since then has only heightened the scrutiny and pressure on his leadership.
