Polanski vows to stay on as Green leader as criticism mounts

Zack Polanski to Stay as Green Party Leader Amid Criticism

BBC News reports that Zack Polanski will remain as the leader of the Green Party despite facing criticism, including calls for his resignation from within his own party.

Ewan Somerville, a political reporter, highlights the recent by-election defeat of Polanski in Holborn and St Pancras, where he came second to Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali. Despite losing, the Green Party's vote share increased by 22% compared to the 2024 general election.

Criticism and Calls for Resignation

Vivien Lichtenstein, the leader of the Jewish Greens, demanded Polanski's resignation, stating his handling of a party conference motion declaring Zionism a form of racism was a "big mistake." Similar sentiments were expressed by former Green Party leader Caroline Lucas, who criticized Polanski for not attending the vote on the motion.

The controversial motion, passed by rank-and-file members, defines Zionism as an ideology supporting an ethnonationalist Jewish state and backs a single democratic Palestinian state in historic Palestine. Lucas described it as "dangerous" and "flawed."

Jonathan Bartley, a former Green co-leader, advised Polanski to "put his hands up" and apologize but did not demand his resignation outright.

Polanski's Response

Polanski defended his absence from the motion vote, citing campaign commitments in North London. When asked about his potential resignation, he affirmed his intention to stay as leader: "Of course I can carry on as leader of the Green Party." He emphasized that the Green movement is larger than any single election or motion.

The party's next leadership ballot is scheduled for summer 2027, where members will decide whether to re-elect Polanski if he remains until then.
