Power Plants Generate 16,447 GWh from Thar Coal in FY26
Pakistan's power projects utilizing Thar coal generated a combined 16,446.521 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity during the fiscal year 2025-26, consuming 13.83 million tonnes of indigenous coal.
According to documents from Wealth Pakistan, six listed power projects with a collective installed capacity of 3,960 megawatts (MW) relied on Thar coal, either solely or in conjunction with imported coal during the fiscal year. These projects collectively consumed 13,834,293 tonnes of Thar coal.
Here's a breakdown:

Thar Coal Block-I Power Generation Company (Pvt.) Limited: This plant, located at Thar Block-I in Sindh, generated 8,330.914 GWh while consuming 6,602,756 tonnes of Thar coal. Its annual coal requirement is 7.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with Thar coal accounting for 100% of its share.

Thar Block-II Projects: Three projects associated with Thar Block-II operated exclusively on Thar coal:

Engro Powergen Thar Pvt. Ltd: Generated 3,816.539 GWh, consuming 3,434,627 tonnes of coal. Its annual requirement is 3.8 MTPA.

Thar Energy Limited: Produced 1,821.777 GWh using 1,630,550 tonnes of Thar coal. Both plants have a 1.9 MTPA coal requirement and a 100% Thar coal share.

ThalNova Power Thar Ltd: Generated 1,824.147 GWh after consuming 1,627,985 tonnes.

Together, these four projects operating solely on Thar coal produced 15,793.377 GWh during FY2025-26 and consumed approximately 13.30 million tonnes of the indigenous fuel.
Two other power plants utilized Thar coal blended with imported coal:

Lucky Electric Power Company Limited (Port Qasim): Employed a 33% Thar coal and 67% imported coal blend during FY2025-26, generating 627.934 GWh from the Thar component and consuming 519,270 tonnes.
