PPP Human Rights Cell Condemns PIMS Nursery Tragedy, Demands Accountability

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Human Rights Cell Information Secretary Tariq Mehmood Ghouri has expressed deep grief and serious concern over the tragic fire at the gynaecology ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), which claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies.
Ghouri stated that the loss of innocent newborn lives was an unbearable tragedy, and the grief of parents who lost their children could not be described in words. He described the incident as a deeply distressing tragedy, extending his thoughts and prayers to the bereaved families.
According to reports, the fire broke out early Wednesday morning on the third floor of the Mother and Child Hospital at PIMS. Hospital officials confirmed that 15 newborn babies were present in the ward, with at least one baby rescued by a doctor. Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances participated in the rescue operation.
Initial accounts suggest an electrical short circuit or possible fault involving an air-conditioning unit as potential causes of the fire. Ghouri emphasized the need for an independent and transparent investigation to determine the exact cause rather than relying solely on preliminary statements.
He raised crucial questions regarding the nursery’s fire safety and emergency preparedness:
- Where were the required fire extinguishers and alarms?
- Were emergency exits accessible?
- Was adequate water and firefighting equipment available?
- Was trained staff present and prepared to respond immediately?
Ghouri demanded a thorough inquiry that examines every aspect of the incident, including fire prevention systems, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, electrical and air-conditioning systems, hospital staff preparedness, and overall safety arrangements for newborns. He also called for the public release of the inquiry’s findings and legal action against anyone found responsible for negligence or non-compliance with safety standards.
"Accountability is essential," Ghouri concluded, stating that while the loss of these innocent children cannot be reversed, determining responsibility can help prevent another family from suffering a similar tragedy.
