EU Fuel Prices On The Rise

In July 2026, the price of fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the European Union (EU) surged by 16.9% compared to July 2025, according to Eurostat. This recent increase follows a pattern of year-on-year growth, with 20.7% in May and 13.7% in June.

Regional Variations

In 25 out of 27 EU countries, fuel and lubricant prices were higher in July 2026 than the previous year. Notably, 13 countries experienced larger annual increases compared to June 2026. However, the majority (24 countries) showed a lower annual rate of change in July compared to May.

Top Increases and Declines

  • Highest increases: Romania (+24.2%), Germany (+22.9%), Lithuania (+22.9%), Bulgaria (+22.2%), Netherlands (+22.0%), Finland (+20.5%)
  • Smallest increase: Hungary (-0.1%)
  • Lowest increases: Sweden (+1.2%), Ireland (+3.2%)

Monthly Trends

On a monthly basis, EU consumers witnessed a rise in diesel prices by 4.3% and petrol prices by 4.7% in July 2026 compared to June. Conversely, June 2026 saw declines in diesel prices (down 6.4%) and petrol (down 4.2%) from May 2026.

Diesel and Petrol Price Fluctuations

Between June and July 2026, 17 EU countries experienced increases in diesel prices, with the highest jumps in Poland (+13.4%), Germany (+12.7%), and Greece (+12.1%). Conversely, prices dropped in 9 countries, led by Cyprus (-7.9%), Sweden (-7.4%), and Ireland (-6.4%) for petrol.
