Protesters Gather as Migrants Brought Ashore on South Coast

BBC News reports on a recent incident where protesters gathered in Gosport, Hampshire, as over 100 migrants believed to be from Normandy, France, were brought ashore after crossing the English Channel.

Police and demonstrators congregated at a marina in Gosport on Sunday evening following the arrival of the migrants aboard two RNLI boats. According to ship tracking data, their dinghy set off from Utah Beach in Normandy during the morning.

French media stated there were approximately 120 migrants on board. Hampshire Police deployed officers to assist partners "in the event of an emergency at sea." They also imposed conditions under the Public Order Act and powers prohibiting face coverings.

A Home Office spokesperson commented:

"The Border Security Command works around the clock to monitor the Channel and protect our border."

They further emphasized the importance of detaining, checking, and processing every small boat arrival.

Protesters in Gosport expressed their sentiments by stopping police vans and chanting.

Similar scenes had occurred previously in the area when protesters awaited migrants arriving on a dinghy, though they were ultimately taken to Dover. This recent event marks the third such crossing in a month. Year-to-date, there have been 19,451 Channel crossings, down 43% from this time last year.
