Paris St-Germain (PSG) and Barcelona, the free-scoring teams, lead the way in the Champions League's group stage, with PSG topping the table on goals scored. Last season, PSG secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at this stage, setting the stage for Barcelona to win their second consecutive Champions League title.

"It will be a fascinating game on Tuesday," predicted French football expert Julien Laurens on BBC Sport's Euro Leagues podcast.

Convinging League Winners

Since the 2025 Club World Cup, both teams rank highly among Europe's top five leagues for goals scored per match. Barcelona have netted 192 times in 68 games (2.82 per match), while PSG have scored 154 in 67 games (2.3 per game). Only Bayern Munich surpass them in this regard.

PSG's dominance in French football is evident, having won 12 of the past 14 Ligue 1 titles, including the last five by a significant margin. In contrast, Barcelona are the reigning La Liga champions, securing the title by eight points over rivals Real Madrid last season.

How they compare to European rivals

A deeper dive into the statistics reveals the impressive form of both teams. In expected goals (xG) per league match in Europe's top five leagues over the past season, Barcelona (2.56) and PSG (2.22) rank second and third, respectively. Bayern Munich lead the pack with 3.06 xG per match.

PSG's squad depth allows for regular rotation, as evidenced by their 3-1 win over Strasbourg on Saturday, despite making eight changes from their previous Champions League victory.

Similarly, Barcelona have bolstered their squad, resulting in an increase in attacking prowess. Ten of their 11 matches this season have seen them score three or more goals, with six games featuring five or more goals.

"The biggest and most obvious difference is the squad depth that they've added through some brilliant signings," noted European football journalist Raphael Honigstein.
