Punjab Govt Moves to Ensure Transparency in Hospital Procurement

The Punjab government has taken an important step to ensure transparency, merit, and integrity in the procurement of medicines, medical equipment, devices, surgical supplies, and consumables in government teaching hospitals.

The Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department has written to the Director General Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab, requesting the nomination of a senior officer of BS-18 or above as an observer in significant procurement activities.

According to the department, key procurement initiatives are underway across the province, including the Central Framework Contract for surgical equipment for tertiary care hospitals. Given their financial importance, volume, and province-wide impact, these procurements require an additional level of institutional oversight. The observer will monitor the process to ensure transparency, competitiveness, impartiality, and compliance with relevant laws, rules, the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) framework, and approved procedures.

The department has also requested that the Anti-Corruption Establishment nominate the officer as an observer in other essential procurement activities when needed. The Punjab government reaffirms its commitment to transparent and effective public fund utilization and a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and irregularities.
