Punjab Warns Farmers Stubble Burning a Punishable Offence
Punjab Agriculture Department has forbidden farmers including the paddy growers from burning stubble, declaring it an offence punishable under section 7 of the Punjab Environmental Protection Laws 2023.
A statement released on Friday by the department's spokesperson highlighted that burning residues and stubble from rice, wheat, maize, sugarcane, and other crops is a violation of environmental protection laws.
The smoke generated by this practice contributes to smog and poses significant risks to human health. Additionally, stubble burning increases air pollution and damages the organic matter in soil, negatively impacting its fertility. Farmers involved in stubble burning face arrest, punishment, and fines.
Farmers have been advised to harvest their rice crop using scientific methods and seeking guidance from local agricultural experts.
