UK Weather: Rain to Stop in Time for Weekend as Sun Returns

BBC Weather

High pressure is set to build across the UK over the next few days, bringing drier weather for the weekend.

Heavy downpours have brought rain to parts this week, albeit with some flash flooding, but these are set to ease.

Weekend Forecast:

  • Saturday and Sunday will see many areas with sunny spells, with daytime temperatures climbing to possibly above the August average in southern England.
  • Nights will be chilly, with temperatures falling to 3-4°C in rural parts of Scotland and northern England on Friday night.

Weekday Weather:

  • Friday brings a chance of further heavy showers, particularly in England and Wales, where some could be thundery. However, Scotland and Northern Ireland will mostly stay dry.
  • Temperatures will peak at 12°C in northern Scotland and up to 21°C across southern England, below the August average.

Drought Situation:

Despite this week’s rain, the ongoing drought situation persists. Over two-thirds of England is in drought, along with all of Wales, and officials note that the situation is still worsening.

Drought will only be declared over once reservoirs, rivers, and groundwater stocks are replenished after months of significant rainfall.

Long-Range Outlook:

The next few weeks look mixed, with rain returning next week and a potential for further hot spells in September. Uncertainty remains high, so stay updated on the BBC Weather website and app for local forecasts.
