Rana Tanveer Stresses Climate-Resilient Agriculture to Ensure Food Security
Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, emphasized the significance of agriculture in Pakistan's national economy and its direct impact on the livelihoods of over 100 million people. He addressed the Agricultural Linkages Conference 2026, highlighting the challenges posed by climate change, including floods, extreme heat, and water scarcity, to Pakistan's agricultural sector and food security.
According to the minister, food security is now a matter of national security, economic stability, and social welfare. He noted the agricultural sector's growth, with a 2.9% increase in 2025 and a significant rise in livestock sector growth of 3.75%. Despite these achievements, he identified a decline in cotton production as a challenge.
Rana Tanveer Hussain suggested increasing wheat production to 5-7 tonnes per hectare through research and modern farming practices, with a focus on water efficiency. He emphasized the development of climate-resilient and heat-tolerant crop varieties, ensuring that research benefits farmers by implementing new technologies.
Strengthening linkages between scientists, agricultural extension services, and the private sector is a priority, with quality seed recognized as crucial for farmers' prosperity.
