It is unclear how Iran makes decisions, while Tehran must prove it will not build nuclear weapons by refraining from producing highly enriched fuel, according to US Vice President JD Vance.
In an interview with an international news agency, Vance stated that:
"The United States is ready for a deal with Iran, but Tehran must show flexibility over its nuclear programme and reduce its uranium enrichment capacity."
Vance questioned the need for Iran to maintain 60% enriched fuel if it does not intend to develop nuclear weapons. He suggested that:
“If Iran does not want nuclear weapons, then why does it need 60 percent enriched fuel?”
The US vice president expressed uncertainty regarding Iran's decision-making process, stating that Washington was negotiating with the Iranian president and foreign minister, but their authority within Iran’s power structure remained unclear.
He emphasized that:
"We are not facing a shortage of weapons in the war against Iran."
Vance also noted that while Iran had periodically targeted commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, it had largely failed to halt energy exports through the waterway.
Regarding his political future, Vance revealed he has not yet decided whether to run for president.
