Wrexham AFC, founded at The Turf Hotel in October 1864, is the oldest football club in Wales. A club statement announced the purchase from Admiral Taverns, expressing the hope to "help protect the historic pub" by incorporating it with the club and ground.
The pub, its landlord Wayne Jones, and its regular appearances in the award-winning "Welcome to Wrexham" Disney documentary series have become integral to the club's identity. Celebrities like Paul Rudd, Channing Tatum, and Will Ferrell have been spotted at The Turf since Reynolds and Mac took over the club in 2021, including Prince William drawing a pint behind the bar in 2024.
"The acquisition allows for the preservation of the history and traditions... linked to the Racecourse Ground and Wrexham AFC Football Club," stated the club. "This includes enhancing the fan zone and other activities in the area."
Jones, who has been landlord for 20 years, expressed excitement about continuing to serve fans and locals at The Turf, its "unique mix of history, atmosphere, and sometimes Hollywood stardust".
The Racecourse Ground, hosting Wales fixtures since 1877, is the world's oldest football stadium still holding international matches.
"By bringing The Turf into the group, we are securing the long-term future of the pub," said Eric Allyn on behalf of minority investors, the Allyn family.
