SEOUL: South Korea’s economy continues to show strong signs of recovery, driven by robust exports and improving domestic consumption, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economy’s monthly economic report.
"Recently, the South Korean economy has been showing solid signs of recovery, supported by a substantial increase in exports and improving domestic consumption," the report stated.
South Korea’s exports surged 68.7% year-on-year in August, boosted by strong semiconductor shipments. However, uncertainties surrounding the war in the Middle East persist, putting pressure on people’s livelihoods due to high oil prices and employment difficulties faced by vulnerable groups and sectors.
Key Economic Indicators:
- Job Market: In August, South Korea added 184,000 jobs year-on-year, with an unemployment rate of 2%, the lowest in months.
- Youth Unemployment: The employment rate for individuals aged 15 to 29 decreased to 44.1%, down by 1 percentage point from a year earlier, marking a continuous decline for almost two years.
- Inflation: Consumer prices rose 3.1% year-on-year in August, accelerating from 2.8% in July.
The finance ministry remains committed to shielding the economy from fallout of the Middle East war, implementing measures to stabilize prices ahead of Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) and introducing economic growth initiatives for the second half of 2026.
