German Police Arrest Suspect Over Sabotage Attacks on Power Grid
BBC News reports that a 48-year-old man has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of carrying out a series of sabotage attacks on the country’s electricity grid. He was detained near the Weisweiler power plant on Tuesday, with explosives found on his person and in a nearby tent rigged with further explosives.
The suspect, identified by German media as Daniel V, is believed to have sent letters claiming responsibility for the incidents, which have occurred across several states. Prior to his arrest, police discovered launch devices and another confession letter near high-voltage lines.
The attacks involve rockets used to shoot wires across high-voltage cables, causing short circuits and temporarily taking offline power-generating units at some plants. Interior Minister Armin Schuster has acknowledged the potential for a regional blackout but urged against jumping to conclusions regarding the motive behind these "unusual" acts.
German media have reported receiving two letters from the suspect, with the Frankfurt General Newspaper (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) noting that the handwritten letters contain information not yet made public.
