Senate Panel Approves Bill Seeking Death Penalty for Acid Attack Convicts

A Senate panel has approved a bill seeking the death penalty for acid attack convicts, along with proposing up to 10 years in prison and fines for physical violence and sexual harassment.
According to media reports, the Senate Standing Committee on Interior met under the chairmanship of Senator Faisal Saleem Rehman and approved important bills aiming at amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
These bills addressed key issues such as:
- Acid Attacks: An amendment to Section 336B of the Pakistan Penal Code was passed, allowing for a death sentence, life imprisonment, or at least 14 years in prison, along with a fine up to Rs2 million, for acid attack convicts. The bill also referenced a recent acid attack on a woman doctor in Quetta.
- Physical and Sexual Assault of Domestic Workers: Up to 10 years in prison and a fine of Rs100,000 have been proposed for assaulting, sexually harassing, forcing labour upon, or withholding wages from domestic workers. Serious injuries or death resulting from such violence will carry a life imprisonment sentence and a fine of Rs500,000, with the offense considered non-bailable.
- Illegal Transfer of LPG: The prison term for illegally transferring LPG into cylinders has been increased from six months to two years (Section 286) with a fine of Rs100,000. Imprisonment under Section 286A has been heightened to five years, with a fine up to Rs500,000.
