Ben Stokes has joined Joe Root in expressing dissatisfaction with the venues chosen for next summer’s Ashes, describing it as "shambolic" that Headingley will not host a Test match.
Root, who served as Test captain before and after Stokes, acknowledged the desire for more options but stressed the importance of a fair system.
England’s victory over Pakistan secured their longest current winning streak at any ground globally, but they will not return to Headingley for a men’s Test until 2029.
Stokes, who retired from international cricket in June, was more scathing, writing on Instagram, "Shame is an understatement. Shambolic would be more appropriate."
While Root suggested Australia might prioritize their own successful venues, Stokes’ comment implies a deeper concern about the fairness of the selection process.
Root expressed hope for a balanced approach, stating, "I think I should probably stay in my lane and understand that it’s someone else’s job to sort out… As a player, you want to play at the grounds you have most success at."
The 2027 Ashes schedule, including the absence of Headingley and Old Trafford, was announced in 2023. Trent Bridge and Southampton will host men’s Ashes Tests for the first time, while Headingley will stage a women’s Ashes Test.
Headingley’s significance in Ashes history, including the legendary 2019 win inspired by Stokes, adds weight to the criticism. England’s record of nine home Ashes wins in Leeds is surpassed only by The Oval, which has hosted 36 Ashes Tests compared to Headingley’s 26.
