Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs Sindh, Munawar Ali Mahesar, has stated that the Sindh Sports Policy 2026 is now in effect across the province following cabinet approval. The policy aims to promote sports for all individuals under the principle of “Sports for All” and nurture new talent from grassroots levels.
Addressing a press conference, Mahesar explained that the policy aligns with the vision of Provincial Sports Minister Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar. Under the 18th Constitutional Amendment, Sindh has the authority to legislate in sports. The policy emphasizes:
- Construction and rehabilitation of grounds
- Welfare programs for athletes
- Provision of basic sports facilities
He announced the launch of a Talent Hunt Program at the district level for children aged 7 to 15, alongside expanding sports activities to grassroots levels. Multi-purpose sports complexes, academies, and sports cities will be established in every division of Sindh. District-level sports activities will also be enhanced.
Physical education and participation in sports have been made compulsory in educational institutions. The policy plans to set up:
- Sports science centers
- Biomechanics labs
- Anti-doping systems
Athletes will benefit from monthly stipends, educational scholarships, and insurance facilities. Special measures will be taken to promote women’s sports, special athletes, and Pink Games. Athletes representing Sindh and at the federal level will receive support from the Sports Department.
The policy encompasses Olympic and non-Olympic sports, e-sports, traditional, cultural, and modern games. Mahesar highlighted that evidence of sports dates back to Mohenjo-Daro, showcasing Sindh’s rich sporting heritage. Promoting sports beyond distinctions of color, race, culture, and religion is a government priority.
He added that reforms and restoration are underway at the Sindh Sports Board, with the Chief Minister of Sindh serving as its Chairman. The board's first meeting will soon be convened to address employee and administrative matters.
Transparency and merit will be prioritized within sports organizations and associations through elections and regulations. Private sports clubs will also come under governance, requiring mandatory registration of all clubs, grounds, and related facilities. Public-private partnerships will be leveraged for sporting events. The activities and fund usage of sports associations receiving government budgets will be monitored for transparency.
