Sister of Pakistan's imprisoned former prime minister, Imran Khan, has been arrested ahead of protests in his support, according to reports from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Aleema Khanum was detained in Lahore on Sunday afternoon, accused of mobilizing supporters through social media and public meetings, with a 30-day detention order issued by the city's deputy commissioner. Her son is demanding her release.
A police official confirmed the arrest to the BBC, stating that she would be taken to Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore. Earlier, her family had no contact or news of her whereabouts.
"We demand the government immediately disclose her whereabouts and ensure her safe return," Khanum's son, Shahrez Khan, wrote on X.
The arrest is believed to be related to planned protests on 27 September, when demonstrators aim to march to Islamabad. The interior minister has stated that these protests harm the country and that the government will do all it can to prevent them.
Imran Khan, a former cricket star, has been detained since 2023 for not declaring income from gifts received while in office, facing over 100 charges, including leaking state secrets and selling state gifts. He was jailed for 14 years last year in a land corruption case.
