It is set to turn warmer across the United Kingdom over the next few days, with temperatures peaking around 25°C (77°F). Widely, however, temperatures will climb into the low 20s Celsius, which is approximately five degrees higher than the average for late September. It will also stay mostly dry with some sunny spells, though rain is likely at times across northern and western parts of the UK.

The Warmth:

  • The warmth is expected to last for much of the week across England and Wales.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland will experience slightly cooler temperatures.

How warm will it get?

High pressure is building across the UK, leading to a more settled weather pattern with brighter conditions. After a chilly start on Monday morning, with sunshine and light winds in England and Wales, temperatures will climb into the low 20s. Even with cloud in Scotland and Northern Ireland, it will turn warmer, reaching highs of 18 to 22°C.

Tuesday's Weather:

  • Misty and foggy conditions are expected early on, but once the sun breaks through, it will feel warmer still.
  • Temperatures could peak at around 24 or 25°C in south-east England, while many other regions will see lows in the mid-20s Celsius.

Record-Breaking Year:

2026 has already been a record-breaking year for the number of days above 25°C, with last week exceeding the record set in 1959.

Rain Returns:

At the start of the week, high pressure will block rain-bearing systems from crossing the UK. However, some rain is anticipated on Tuesday as a weather front moves into western Scotland and Northern Ireland. This will spread across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and western England by Wednesday, bringing temperatures back to around 14 to 18°C.

Drier and Warmer Conditions:

Drier and warmer conditions are expected to persist in east and south-east England, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s Celsius. While temperatures may drop slightly by the end of the week, they will still be above average, ranging from 18°C to 22°C.

Will There Be a Heatwave?

Despite the warm spell, it will not meet the criteria for a heatwave as defined by the Met Office (temperatures reaching 26-28°C for three consecutive days). However, these temperatures are notably high for late September, giving the impression of a return to summer.
