Trump Downplays AI Risks Despite Expert Warnings
BBC News reports on Donald Trump’s response to concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) risks, following warnings from experts and calls for slowing down development.
"You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen," Trump stated during a visit to Ireland.
This comes after a former Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, expressed grave concerns about the potential for AI to cause humanity’s "immediate demise" if development continued at its current pace. Industry leaders, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman of OpenAI, echoed these fears and called for a slowdown.
Trump, however, framed the issue in terms of competition with China, saying, "We’re leading China on AI… and, frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins."
The AI security debate continues to spark discussions globally, with lawmakers facing pressure to address potential risks while avoiding regulation that could stifle American innovation.
