Threat to Demolish Kennedy Center if Renovations Blocked
The Trump administration has threatened to demolish the Kennedy Center if planned renovations for the performing arts venue are not allowed to proceed, according to court documents.
Attorneys from the justice department have also requested that President Donald Trump's name be restored to the building, which was removed in June following a court order. They argued that:
"An order blocking the Board from appropriately recognizing President Trump... will cause donors to flee, financial contributions to dry up, and structural rehabilitation to stop."
The venue, one of Washington D.C.'s iconic landmarks, has been a target for renovation by Trump since his return to the White House in 2025.
Trump's legal team maintained that without the renovations, the center "will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down". They also described it as "embarrassing to the Nation's Capital".
Following the potential demolition, a determination of the site's future use would include options like a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River.
This threat emerges weeks after the Kennedy Center board voted to add Trump's name back to the facade and proceed with a two-year closure for renovations. Many of these board members are Trump allies appointed by the president.
A previous court ruling found that Trump's name had been added unlawfully, as renaming the cultural institution requires congressional approval. As a result, the name was removed in June.
This case is part of a broader legal dispute over the Kennedy Center's designation as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.
It's one of several projects Trump has undertaken since his return to Washington, including renovations to the National Mall's reflecting pool, plans for a 250-foot victory arch, construction of a ballroom in the White House East Wing, and additions like his name on institutions such as the Kennedy Center and US Institute of Peace.
