Trump Says AI Safety Fears a ‘Hoax’ as He Rejects Calls for Greater Safeguards

US President Donald Trump has dismissed concerns about Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety as a "hoax", arguing against proposals for stricter regulations. This comes after Jack Clark, co-founder of AI company Anthropic, suggested implementing a "kill switch" for potentially dangerous AI, to be independently verified.
This debate unfolded against a backdrop of growing warnings from AI executives and staff about the technology’s risks. These concerns led to a dip in shares of some tech firms on Monday, as investors contemplated the potential impact of a slowdown in AI development.
In a series of social media posts, Trump compared these AI warnings to the "Global Warming Scam", attributing it to the "Radical Left Dumocrats". He further likened himself to a "Hoax Buster" and asserted that "the only guardrails needed for AI is a strong and smart president".
Chinese state media also weighed in, stating that experts had warned against "Washington’s growing anxiety over China’s rapid AI development". They suggested that this anxiety could "distort US policy priorities" and benefit China.
Jack Clark, however, echoed the need for safeguards, suggesting that while "most labs have ways to pull the plug", lawmakers might need to mandate a "kill switch" for AI.
Microsoft AI joined the conversation, publishing an "outline document" on "humanist AI" to address these concerns. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, indicated that the company had been developing these guidelines for months, releasing them now due to the current AI safety debate.
The discussion will intensify further when Steve Bannon (former Trump strategist) and Bernie Sanders (progressive senator) address the "Pro-Human Assembly" in Washington on Tuesday, representing opposing political viewpoints on AI policy.
