Trump says Canada wants ‘benefits’ of being US state as Carney says countries in trade war

Trump Claims Canada Seeks US Statehood Benefits

BBC News reports that US President Donald Trump has accused Canada of wanting "the benefits of being a State, without being one" following the collapse of trade talks between the two nations. This came after Trump posted on Truth Social, blaming Canada for demanding too much and offering too little.

Carney Responds, Trade War Looms

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney countered that the fresh US tariffs, set to begin on September 8th, targeting steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics, are a "miscalculation" designed to "hurt and divide us." He confirmed Canada would retaliate "dollar-for-dollar," marking the escalation of a trade "war."

Failed Negotiations

The breakdown in negotiations, which offered no resolution, upended a deeply integrated trade relationship. Carney emphasized Canada’s refusal to accept the US proposals, stating, "We cannot accept what they’ve offered, and we will not give what they’ve asked."

New and Existing Tariffs

The US has imposed new 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, in addition to existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber. These new tariffs affect approximately $20 billion of Canadian imports, covering about 5% in total, including wine, dairy, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment.

Political Support for Carney

Other Canadian federal party leaders and provincial leaders have expressed support for Carney, who faces a crucial test after walking away from Trump‘s proposed deal.

Trump‘s Tariff Policy

Trump‘s trade policy has relied heavily on tariffs, arguing they protect American manufacturing and create jobs. However, critics contend tariffs raise consumer prices and disrupt the global economy.

Carney‘s Address

In his first address to Canadians after the deal collapse, Carney accused the US of making "unfair" and "uneconomic" last-minute changes, while US negotiators claimed Canada made new demands and walked back previously agreed terms.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer declared on Fox News that there were no plans to resume talks, solidifying the end of negotiations.
